Research and Planning: Genre Research

Horror
Horror films aim to scare and shock the audience and are often wanting an emotional response from the audience. This genre uses low key lighting in mise en scene to create a dark and sinister atmosphere that helps build tension and preys on the audiences fears. As these films want to scare the audience they are usually a higher rating such as certificate 18. Colours are a big feature in horror films as the victum's are usually shown in lighter colours whereas the villians/monster is shown in dark colours this helps to portray the character. In film trailers this genre tend to show a quick narrative that keeps the audience intrigued and make them want to watch.

Comedy
Comedy films use different types of humour e.g. American Pie uses a crude humour whereas Napoleon Dynamite is more of a subtle humour that won't suit all however all comedy films are light hearted as the main aim of the film is to entertain and make the audience laugh. It is important in comedy that the characters expressions, actions and way of speaking to get the funny situation across to the audience. Most comedy films have a main lead character that are funnier than the rest which make them stand out from the rest and leave an impression, the film is usually based around this characters life. The comedy genre doesn't depend on sound as actions are often viewed as funny therefore many silent movies are of the comedy genre. The rating for this genre vary as there are many ways of expressing humour for some films such as The Hangover that use stronger language the rating will be higher.

Action
Action films usually involve lots of special effects as the action is shown in fight sequels, car chases and often life and death situations. Therefore this genre relies on having a good side and a bad side, the good character usually battles against an opposing force and often conquering them therefore giving the audience a feeling of suspension and relief. This genre is often aimed at a male audience as they use gadgets and guns etc to excite that gender and use fast editing with lots of straight cuts to create engaging scenes that  involve the audience.

Romance
Often romance films are aimed at a female audience as they usually include emotional scenes that females can relate to and sympathize with more than males. This genre is often categorised as 'chick flicks' as they specifically want a female audience as they present the ideal image of love which is unobtainable to the audience which makes them long for the fairytale love story of their own. These films usually present either a male or female character that has trouble with falling in love or having a hard life and then the opposite sex character will come in and whisk them away e.g. Twilight is an ordinary girl with a boring life then a vampire appears in her life and they fall in love therefore this is a twist due to the fantasy element but still stereotypical romance. The lighting is usually high key to create  a positive and happy atmosphere that help present the perfect relationship with the perfect life which creates a light hearted feel good film. The ratings for this genre vary from PG up to certificate 15 depending on sex scenes etc but most are rated certificate 12.
